While Kuala Lumpur is usually the first thing people think of when they visit Malaysia, Penang offers a much slower, more soulful pace of life.
As our second busiest hub, it’s got a personality you won't find anywhere else. It’s that rare place where you can spend the morning wandering through crumbly, historic colonial streets and the evening watching the sun dip into the ocean, all without leaving the island.
If you’re planning your pre-wedding photos, Penang is basically a giant, living studio. Here're my personal favorite spots to capture those "once-in-a-lifetime" shots.

1. George Town (UNESCO Heritage Zone)
Walking through the heart of George Town feels like you’ve stepped into a time machine. There’s something so romantic about the weathered textures of the lime-washed walls and those narrow, hidden alleyways, they have a character that a modern studio just can’t replicate.
If you love that old-world charm similar to Malacca, you’ll feel right at home here. Beyond the famous street art, make sure to check out the City Hall near the Esplanade for some grand colonial vibes, or head over to the Clan Jetties for a more rustic, waterfront aesthetic.
2. The Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze)
The striking indigo-blue walls of this courtyard house provide a backdrop that is both bold and incredibly elegant. It’s a masterful blend of Eastern and Western architecture, making it the go-to spot if you’re aiming for a timeless, "Crazy Rich Asians" aesthetic.
Just a heads-up: while it shares that heritage DNA with the Peranakan Mansion, the vibe here is much moodier with its deep blues, compared to the reds and golds found elsewhere. Also, they are quite strict about commercial photography, so you’ll definitely need to book your session well in advance to avoid any hiccups on the day.
3. Pinang Peranakan Mansion
If you want your photos to capture the stately elegance of a Peranakan manor, this is the place. It’s a treasure trove filled with opulent antiques, intricate wood carvings, and shimmering gold leaf. It really showcases the height of Straits Chinese culture and luxury.
Unlike some of the more "exclusive" boutique spots, this mansion is quite popular with tourists and allows walk-ins for tickets(RM200 for pre-wedding photoshoot). If you want to avoid having random strangers in the background of your shots, my best advice is to be there right when the doors open at 9:00 AM. Trust me, the morning light coming through the courtyards is worth the early wake-up call!
4. Seven Terraces
This row of Anglo-Chinese terrace houses is all about symmetry and sophistication. It’s been beautifully restored into a boutique hotel, and the interiors are just stunning, perfect for couples who want a shoot that feels private and high-end.
Because it’s a functioning hotel and a premier wedding venue, it’s much quieter than the other mansions. Here’s a "pro-tip", instead of just paying for a few hours of photoshoot time, why not just book a room? It’s often better value, and you get to do your shoot at a relaxed pace while enjoying a staycation right in the middle of George Town.
5. Botanical Garden
If you’re a fan of lush, wide-open greenery, the "Waterfall Gardens" is probably already on your radar. It’s a favorite for a reason, the manicured lawns give off a very "exclusive golf club" vibe that looks incredibly clean and classy in photos. It’s the perfect spot if you want that fresh, airy garden look without having to hike into the actual jungle.
However, there’s a big "but" right now. With the Penang Hill Cable Car construction in full swing (expected to wrap up by early 2027), the area is a bit of a work zone. You can’t drive your car straight to the main gate anymore. Most visitors have to park further out and walk about 10–15 minutes just to get to the entrance.
Walking 15 minutes in the Penang heat is one thing, but doing it in a heavy, multi-layered wedding gown or a full tuxedo is a whole different level of "sweaty".
6. Mengkuang Dam
For the nature lovers who want to get away from the city traffic, the mainland has a real gem. The expansive views of the lake paired with lush, rolling greenery create an airy, tranquil atmosphere that feels like you’ve flown off to a different country.
The only real downside is the Malaysia heat! It can get quite intense out in the open, so I highly recommend scheduling your shoot between 7:00–8:00 AM or during the "golden hour" from 5:00–6:00 PM. Also, don't forget to pack a portable fan and a sturdy umbrella.
7. Teluk Bayu Beach
If your dream is to have a romantic sunset shoot by the water, this is the spot. Known for its iconic pine trees and calm, lapping waves, Teluk Bayu is arguably the best place in Penang for those dreamy coastal shots as the sky turns orange and pink.
With all the new developments like the Silicon Island project and the upcoming LRT, many of our local beaches have changed quite a bit. Fortunately, this spot still feels like a hidden gem. It’s mostly known to locals, so you can usually find a quiet corner to yourselves without too much trouble.
